Making Moves

Hi gang.

I’ve been pretty busy so far and it’s already February, can you believe that? The years plan of having it all come together seems to be working out pretty well which is really positive!

State of the Encyclopedia no.2(10)

Here’s some news:

The Art of Comics

So today I received the official word (more or less) that enough students have enrolled to take The Art of Comics that it’s actually going to happen! Holy bones, I am very excited. Very big thanks to every one who has signed up already and anyone else who wants to enroll, follow the link (http://cia.edu/continuinged) — we’ll be happy to have you.

Friends

My buddies over at Sean Malloy Productions have really been moving! They’ve got a new site and a beautiful logo and they shot a new short picture over the weekend. Looking forward to checking that out when they are ready.

Genghis Con

All this updating and I didn’t tell you guys that I went to Cleveland’s best comic book convention!

Fine establishment Astound! Comics held the first annual Genghis Con in the twilight of ’09 and I was lucky enough to attend. It’s been a couple months past now, but man, that was a wonderful way to spend a Saturday. Not only did I get to meet some local comic makers, but I got to stand around and talk to the internetionally-known critic Abhay Kholsa. Shit can this man write, and it was a great time to share some words with him. I insisted that I was his biggest fan at the show and he insisted he was never tabling at a convention again.

I will always have fond memories of my first, but I’m already looking forward to next year. See you there.

The House

We’ve made great progress with out house! The hardwood floors are all cleaned up and the main living area has shed its wallpaper and been fixed up all proper. We’re in the final stages of Phase One, and when that’s done, we can probably start letting people see it, so you should expect pictures.

In an act of appeasement, we got a television set so that we can now play our video game systems. This is good news for the Wii and PS2 that have been sitting in the basement all disconnected for almost a year. While my wallet can’t keep up with the dreams awakened by this purchase, I’m looking forward to the stateside release of Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon in March.

(Things are really happening in the next couple of months! Joanna Newsom’s new record, Have One on Me also comes out!!!!!! wow)

That’s All

Till next time, when I will tell you some things that might be of interest to you

END OF THE uh… decade

GUYS! I missed you.

So much has been going on I don’t even know where to begin. Let’s start with the latest, Liz Marie Suburbia Bradley drew me an amazing fan art for Spoilers! True, I kind of guilted her into doing it in the first place, but man, little Amelia has never looked so good.

State of the Encyclopedia Address

It’s time for your first State of the ‘Cyclopedia Address, where I will lay down some fax about what has been going on and why you haven’t read anything new on here for a couple weeks. (more…)

Something Else I Did

Making lack of new Spoilers even more infuriating, here’s a side thing I did. I worked with the writer, Jennifer, on a freelance project at the beginning of the year. She’s a hero to dogs in need everywhere, and she asked me to do what little I could to help her cause.

Don’t kill Pit Bulls, they don’t deserve it.

Art of Comics

I think I posted this on all my other internet places except this one, but here it is – I’m trynna teach this in the next couple of weeks. If you are in the Cleveland area and want to make a comic and or listen to me talk with you about comics, check it out.

I’ll come back to blogging soon. I’ve got my final San Diego report in the can and the next Spoilers as well. (I’m hoping the Disney <3 Marvel news has made everyone forget how long it’s been since my last updates…)

Chapter 14: !!

sppromo14

New chapter of Spoilers is up.

I’ve been doing trial and error trying to find the best way to present updates with this comic. The format it’s in now is perfect for the overall book, but I don’t know how well it serves reading it along with its development. What I would really need for that is some sort of blog format… (more…)

Chapter 13: Bye (I Miss You Already)

sppromo13-2

Sorry this is a little late, but the second part of the epic 13th chapter of Spoilers is now up.

Now what are we going to do?

I’m still working on the best way to load all this content, so if you’re having issues using the chapter links, the best bet is to just keep scrolling down till you can’t scroll no more. I’ll figure it out.

San Diego Report pt. 1

comiccon1

Starting out

I had poison ivy all over my face and it was starting to show up on my arms. But we were going to San Diego, California on all expense paid trip to the San Diego Comic Con International so I just made sure I didn’t scratch anything and we were sure to have a good time. We had a driver come pick us up promptly at 11 am on Wednesday morning, and he made the hour long trip to the airport in half the time (he has been a driver for quite some time and knows how to move). Things went smoothly before the flight and I gave my business card to Norvell (“So you say you’re amazing?”), who had checked my bags and gave me the good advice not to put my wallet in my shoe going through the x-ray machine. At the airport, water cost one nine nine.

Things are looking Up and Out

Some extra pluses (plusses? no, it got a red underline. pluses it is).

  • Got my business cards back from the printer and they look like what I wanted so that’s a good thing. It’s nice to have something that wasn’t printed on my inkjet, as amazing as it has been in the past.
  • Came home to receive my proof of the new pushups in the mail. It is so much better than the Lulu one. I matched it to the pages of the books I had made and the only difference was between ink and laser jet printing. The paper has a nice thickness and a slight semigloss, which is a definite improvement on Lulu’s glossy pages and cheap super-sheen covers. And as I mentioned, at $4.48 is a lot more affordable than $10.30 and more fitting for such a small book. So, the lesson is, if you want to make a comic book or other magazine, use MagCloud. If you want some other kind of book, I’m sure there are better alternatives than Lulu. (The only upside to Luly [that's how I accidentally keep spelling it] is there are more sizes and types. MagCloud only has roughly 8.5 by 11) UPDATE: Actually, the MagCloud price is $5.60 (or more, depending on if it lets me add markup like it says it will – only would be a dollar, folks) but it’s $4.48 now until the end of August cause it’s on SALE! “You was gonna hafta have it anyways” ~Gallagher
  • My old posts were not lost in the move! As I have more time, I will put them back up, at least the good ones. It’d be cool if I could figure out how to post them in the past, though.
  • Our wonderful dog Ursa made through a second round of obedience class as the star puppy! When we brought her in the first time 17 weeks ago, she hid under our chairs the entire time, scared of everyone. Last night, she was silly and wanting to play with all the other dogs so bad and even had a complete stranger staring her down, and all she wanted to do was play. Cautiously, sure, but she was still having fun. On to the next round. (Ursa is a very shy dog who is very uncomfortable around people, especially if they look her in the eyes. She’s come a long way, though)
  • That’s all I got today. I’ll be posting again next week, with San Diego news and a Spoilers update announcement.

Up to Speed

Hi gang, quick update of all the things that have happened since u been gone:

  • Been working like a fool
  • the new pushups was featured in the “Emerge and See” Summer issue of the downloadable Cleveland-based Messy Magazine
  • I moved the new pushups over to MagCloud, an HP project, because Lulu has not been good to anyone I know. The book is now half the price it was before (Lulu’s production costs went up, setting the 20 page book over $10). I haven’t gotten my proof back yet (should come today) but I have the feeling it’ll be a lot better. I think it might be thinner, more like a regular comic pamphlet. In any event, I designed a new cover for it and spruced some other things up so at least it will look nicer. Buy it here
  • Obviously, I changed the look of this blog. As I have more time, I’ll be digging into the structure and teaching myself how to build my own theme someday, but I wanted to get it all ready for San Diego. This goes hand in hand with the new Twitter look as well as the pending portfolio site design. I’ll be picking up new business cards today, hopefully they won’t have fucked up the printing.
  • Fixed the slow loading problem on Spoilers, so now it works much more like it used to, back in the flash days.
  • I’ll be teaching a class about comics in September! Stay tuned for more details as they become known.

That’s about it, besides the good news that Emily will now be able to have health insurance. I’ve got a couple of new Spoilers strips done, which I’ll start putting up when I get back from California next week. I’m hoping that with the lead in time I’ll be able to start updating weekly.
