Whatever you call it – graphic novels, comix, manga, BD, funnies, sequential art – comics is an artistic medium that is ripe with possibilities. Beginning February 8th, the Cleveland Institute of Art’s Continuing Education department will offer Art of Comics, an eight-week studio course. This class examines the growing medium of comics from a creative standpoint, with the intention of learning what makes a comic a “comic,” and how they are made.

Accessible to artists, enthusiasts, and the simply curious, this class is designed to start building the tools needed to identify and implement the strengths of comics. We’ll break down the different elements at work within any given comic (timing, page layout, composition style, etc), discussing how they work together and to what end. Each student will then piece them back together in his or her own personal project.

[Art of Comics] is designed to start building the tools needed to identify and implement the strengths of comics.

Art of Comics is unlike other comics classes because it combines a technical approach with a conceptual, literary one – supplemented by a hand-picked reading list that goes far beyond the typical canon. Throughout the course, you’ll develop, write and produce your comics work in a supportive environment that will encourage you to push yourself and have fun with the material.

The range of possibilities available with comics is vast. The goal of this class is to highlight a diverse sampling of some of the possibilities out there and to help cultivate even more possibilities yet to come.

Art of Comics will run on Thursdays, February 11th – April 1st, 6:00pm – 9:00pm. Visit http://www.cia.edu/continuinged to register online and for more information. Discounts available for early registrations!
