Burgers

Dying of hunger* with no idea where to go in San Diego and skeptical of our ability to even get there, this is how we found Just Burgers. Had we not gotten to the hotel when we did, we may never have begun our love affair with the best veggie burgers in America. I even left the pickles on. Wednesday night marked the beginning of our hotel ritual – Just Burgers and GSN.
*nobody died, but it got close.

Spoilers update

sppromo13-1

The next chapter of Spoilers is up, Chapter 13. This is a really long one, so you only get the first half this week. Tune in next week to see how it all goes down!

And then, tune in the week after that to see what else is going on. And, fingers crossed, the week after that and so on. That’s right, trying to weekly updates on this thing. I’ll believe if you believe.

San Diego part 2 later today.

San Diego Report pt. 1

Starting out

I had poison ivy all over my face and it was starting to show up on my arms. But we were going to San Diego, California on all expense paid trip to the San Diego Comic Con International so I just made sure I didn’t scratch anything and we were sure to have a good time. We had a driver come pick us up promptly at 11 am on Wednesday morning, and he made the hour long trip to the airport in half the time (he has been a driver for quite some time and knows how to move). Things went smoothly before the flight and I gave my business card to Norvell (“So you say you’re amazing?”), who had checked my bags and gave me the good advice not to put my wallet in my shoe going through the x-ray machine. At the airport, water cost one nine nine.

San Diego

was awesome. Comic Con itself was huge and overwhelming but a lot of good things and happiness went on over the past 5 days and I would like to tell you all about it. BRB.

Things are looking Up and Out

Some extra pluses (plusses? no, it got a red underline. pluses it is).

  • Got my business cards back from the printer and they look like what I wanted so that’s a good thing. It’s nice to have something that wasn’t printed on my inkjet, as amazing as it has been in the past.
  • Came home to receive my proof of the new pushups in the mail. It is so much better than the Lulu one. I matched it to the pages of the books I had made and the only difference was between ink and laser jet printing. The paper has a nice thickness and a slight semigloss, which is a definite improvement on Lulu’s glossy pages and cheap super-sheen covers. And as I mentioned, at $4.48 is a lot more affordable than $10.30 and more fitting for such a small book. So, the lesson is, if you want to make a comic book or other magazine, use MagCloud. If you want some other kind of book, I’m sure there are better alternatives than Lulu. (The only upside to Luly [that's how I accidentally keep spelling it] is there are more sizes and types. MagCloud only has roughly 8.5 by 11) UPDATE: Actually, the MagCloud price is $5.60 (or more, depending on if it lets me add markup like it says it will – only would be a dollar, folks) but it’s $4.48 now until the end of August cause it’s on SALE! “You was gonna hafta have it anyways” ~Gallagher
  • My old posts were not lost in the move! As I have more time, I will put them back up, at least the good ones. It’d be cool if I could figure out how to post them in the past, though.
  • Our wonderful dog Ursa made through a second round of obedience class as the star puppy! When we brought her in the first time 17 weeks ago, she hid under our chairs the entire time, scared of everyone. Last night, she was silly and wanting to play with all the other dogs so bad and even had a complete stranger staring her down, and all she wanted to do was play. Cautiously, sure, but she was still having fun. On to the next round. (Ursa is a very shy dog who is very uncomfortable around people, especially if they look her in the eyes. She’s come a long way, though)
  • That’s all I got today. I’ll be posting again next week, with San Diego news and a Spoilers update announcement.

Up to Speed

Hi gang, quick update of all the things that have happened since u been gone:

  • Been working like a fool
  • the new pushups was featured in the “Emerge and See” Summer issue of the downloadable Cleveland-based Messy Magazine
  • I moved the new pushups over to MagCloud, an HP project, because Lulu has not been good to anyone I know. The book is now half the price it was before (Lulu’s production costs went up, setting the 20 page book over $10). I haven’t gotten my proof back yet (should come today) but I have the feeling it’ll be a lot better. I think it might be thinner, more like a regular comic pamphlet. In any event, I designed a new cover for it and spruced some other things up so at least it will look nicer. Buy it here
  • Obviously, I changed the look of this blog. As I have more time, I’ll be digging into the structure and teaching myself how to build my own theme someday, but I wanted to get it all ready for San Diego. This goes hand in hand with the new Twitter look as well as the pending portfolio site design. I’ll be picking up new business cards today, hopefully they won’t have fucked up the printing.
  • Fixed the slow loading problem on Spoilers, so now it works much more like it used to, back in the flash days.
  • I’ll be teaching a class about comics in September! Stay tuned for more details as they become known.

That’s about it, besides the good news that Emily will now be able to have health insurance. I’ve got a couple of new Spoilers strips done, which I’ll start putting up when I get back from California next week. I’m hoping that with the lead in time I’ll be able to start updating weekly.

Uh…

I wanted to update my WordPressing and so I tried to back up my old stuff, but I don’t know if I did it right.

SO, this may be a completely brand new start to this blog with everything else erased OR I’ll figure out how to repost all my archives.

One way or the other, it’s a new day here at the Encyclopedia.
